The FBI is now investigating after naked pictures of actress Jennifer Lawrence and other female stars were leaked online.
A spokesman said the agency is "aware of the allegations concerning computer intrusions and the unlawful release of material involving high profile individuals, and is addressing the matter."
Photographs of the 24-year-old Oscar-winner started to appear on website 4chan on Sunday evening after the star's Apple iCloud account was thought to have been hacked and a number of images showing her in various states of undress were posted by an anonymous user.
Actress Jennifer Lawrence is among the victims of 100 women including model Kate Upton which have surfaced online.
Jennifer's furious lawyers contacted police and released a statement confirming the snaps are real.
The representative says: "This is a flagrant violation of privacy.
"The authorities have been contacted and will prosecute anyone who posts the stolen photos of Jennifer Lawrence."
The hacker claimed to have at least 60 photographs of Jennifer - some which they posted online in exchange for the online currency bitcoins.
Jessica Brown Findlay, who shot to fame playing Lady Sybil in the hit ITV show Downton Abbey, also appears naked in a video which was posted on the site.
A raft of A-list celebrities and British stars, such as Cara Delevingne and Michelle Keegan, are also thought to have been targeted.
It's not the first time the FBI has investigated after naked pictures of stars have been leaked.
The agency launched Operation Hackerazzi to find a hacker who stole naked snaps from the computers and phones of Scarlett Johansson, Mila Kunis and other stars in 2010.
The investigation took 11 months but led to the prosecution of Florida hacker, Christopher Chaney.
