Sports - Heart problem force former Arsenal goalkeeper into retirement



Former Arsenal goalkeeper, Manuel Almunia has retired from professional football after being diagnosed with a life threatening heart condition.

The Spanish born Goal stopper was on the verge of securing a move to Italian side, Cagliari but a cardiac problem was revealed while the player was having his medicals at the club and doctors advised him to retire from active sports has the ailment could be fatal.

The 37-year-old goalkeeper signed for Arsenal in 2004 and made 175 appearances for the Gunners over the course of eight years before he was eventually released in 2012.

Almunia was initially a backup goalkeeper to former Germany international Jens Lehmann before eventually displacing the German in goal for the Gunners.

High profile errors and loss of form meant that Almunia was benched during the last few months of his Arsenal career.

After leaving the Emirate, Almunia spent two years at Watford before leaving the side at the end of last season.
